Media Rooms

Media Rooms

The term media room has evolved into a generic definition for a multipurpose space that is outfitted with a large flat-screen television, surround sound and cozy seating. Friends congregate there to watch the big game.

2-Channel Audio

Normal stereo — the kind with a left and a right channel (or a left and a right speaker).

Surround Sound

Surround Sound

Surround sound brings your media experience to life. Available in several formats, it's used everywhere from media rooms to full movie theaters. See our diagram below to help select the format that's right for you.

Whole Home Audio/Video

Whole Home Audio/Video

Imagine pausing a movie in the living room, then starting it at the same spot from the comfort of your bedroom. Or having a party where the music moves with you, playing seamlessly whether guests are in the kitchen, the living room or on the patio. This sort of whole-home audio/video system distributes sources — such as satellite TV or a DVD player — to different environments or zones throughout your home. Sources are centralized in one location, giving you the convenience to enjoy of your music, movies or media in any room of your home.

Whole Home Automation “Smart Homes”

Whole Home Automation “Smart Homes”

This involves the control and automation of audio/video, lighting, heating/ac (via smart thermostats), ventilation, and security, as well as home appliances such as washer/dryers, ovens or refrigerators. Wi-Fi is often used for remote monitoring and control. Today's systems generally consist of switches and sensors connected to a central hub from which the system is controlled with a user interface that is interacted either with a wall-mounted terminal, mobile phone software, tablet computer or web interface.

Security Systems

Security Systems

These involve the security hardware in place on a property, and personal security practices. Hardware examples would be doors, locks, alarm systems, lighting, motion detectors, security cameras, etc. that are installed on property. Personal security practices would be ensuring doors are locked, alarms activated, windows closed, extra keys not hidden outside and many other routine tasks which act to prevent a burglary. Common security methods include never hiding extra keys outside, never turning off all the lights and applying small CCTV stickers on doors and windows and placing a security sign in the front lawn.

Lighting Control

Lighting Control

A lighting control system is an intelligent network based solution that incorporates communication between various system inputs and outputs related to lighting control with the use of one or more central computing devices. Lighting control systems are widely used on both indoor and outdoor lighting of commercial, industrial, and residential spaces. Lighting control systems serve to provide the right amount of light where and when it is needed. These systems are commonly referred to as "Smart Lighting."

Home Theater Design & Install

Home Theater Design & Install

Home Theater refers to home entertainment audio-visual systems that seek to reproduce a movie theater experience and mood, using consumer electronics-grade video and audio equipment that is set up in a room or backyard of a private home. Today, a home theater system typically uses a video projector or a large flat-screen high-resolution HDTV system, a movie or other video content on a DVD or high-resolution Blu-ray disc, which is played on a DVD player or Blu-ray player. The audio portion is augmented with a multi-channel power amplifier and anywhere from 2.0 channel audio system to an 8.1 channel surround sound system. Whether home cinema enthusiasts have a stereo set-up or an 8.1 surround sound system, they typically use at least one low-frequency subwoofer speaker cabinet to amplify low-frequency effects from movie soundtracks and reproduce the deep pitches from the musical soundtrack.

Speaker Configurations

  • 2-Channel Audio

    2-Channel Audio

Normal stereo — the kind with a left and a right channel (or a left and a right speaker).
  • 5.1 Surround Audio

    5.1 Surround

This is the primary format for creating and delivering surround sound. It's widely used in movie theaters, digital television, DVD-video and audio, and even the latest game consoles. Source signals have the five main channels and one LFE (low-frequency effects) bass channel. Playback systems usually have five main speakers and one subwoofer.
  • 7.1 Surround Audio

    7.1 Surround

Not to be outdone, some have taken the 5.1 or 6.1 channel encoding on a DVD and used some computer horsepower to create two independent back surround speakers for even more surround sound, making it 7.1. Note that 7.1 isn't a true discrete surround-sound format (no DVDs on the market have 7.1 channels of sound). Instead, it refers to the manufacturers' own systems used to derive two back surround channels from existing stereo (2.0), 5.1, or even the 6.1-channel sources just mentioned.
  • 8.1+ Surround Audio

    8.1 and Greater

You'll probably hear about even higher designations — 8.1, 9.1, 10.2, and so on. These are in the realm of the home theater enthusiast, and if you're evaluating such gear, a home theater consultant is probably standing next to you, so follow their recommendations. The newest systems (such as Dolby Digital Plus) can theoretically support systems up to 13.1
  • Dolby Digital Audio

    Dolby Digital

Dolby Digital is the common version containing up to six discrete channels of sound. The most elaborate mode in common use involves five channels for normal-range speakers (right, center, left, right surround, left surround) and one channel for the subwoofer.
  • Dolby Atmos Audio

    Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos is an "object-based" audio format. So instead of assigning audio to specific channels (left, right, etc.) in your system, Dolby Atmos actually attaches sound to objects on-screen. This truly puts you in the middle of the action, because it can deliver sound from every angle, including above.
